Case Study
Identifying and building a recurring revenue stream for an independent bookstore
Indie bookstores compete on curation and relationship, but most of their revenue depends on foot traffic. We analyzed whether a subscription program could provide a reliable revenue stream that works when the store is closed.
A curated book subscription was the right fit: high perceived value, recurring predictable revenue, and something an indie bookstore is uniquely positioned to deliver well. We identified the opportunity, wrote the business plan, built the technology, marketed it, and sold it.
The subscription program needed both a customer-facing enrollment flow and an internal fulfillment layer. The public site handles subscription purchases and account management. The internal operations layer tracks fulfillment, integrates with inventory, and surfaces subscription data in the daily reporting suite. A subscription sale automatically creates the right downstream work without manual coordination.
The subscription program launched in 2025 and is generating recurring revenue. Operations are handled through the internal tools with no manual paper process.
